Pictorial landscapes capturing nature: Kwon Soon-wang solo exhibition <A Wave of Pathos>

Modern artist Kwon Soon-wang's solo exhibition, <A Wave of Pathos>, will be held at Art Cube 2R2 from May 6 to June 24. The exhibition presents new paintings that explore love, relationships, and the traces of existence, drawing inspiration from natural landscapes and fleeting moments of light.
Kwon Soon-wang is a contemporary artist who has pursued 'Prainting,' expanding printmaking techniques into painting and installation. He has explored truths obscured by history, time and life, and individual existential sensations through both planar and installation works, notably presenting the series 'Hidden Persistence'.
This exhibition centers on the sense of 'Pathos,' a theme the artist has long explored. Organically connected lines and layered color strata move beyond the mere representation of landscape to reveal the passage of sensation and memory. Elements such as rainbows, wind, and the flow of light are built into a pictorial rhythm. The spreading color planes and the traces left on the surfaces convey the distance, warmth, tension, and lingering resonance inherent in the emotion of love.
Kwon Soon-wang holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Hongik University and taught contemporary printmaking at Hongik University College of Art. He has pursued his work both domestically and internationally, participating in programs such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art's International Exchange Artist and the Seoul Museum of Art Nanji Residency. In 2024, he received the U.S. White House Lifetime Achievement Award, and his works are held in major institutions, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art Bank, Seoul Museum of Art, and Gyeonggi Museum of Art.
Ji-sook Hong, CEO of ARTTOKEN/Art Cube 2R2, discussed the thematic connection with Oh Ji-yoon's concurrent solo exhibition held in the same space. She stated, "While Oh Ji-yoon's exhibition explored human existence through the accumulation of matter and time, <A Wave of Pathos> is an exhibition that expresses the flow of nature and the movement of emotion in a more lyrical and sensory manner. I hope that visitors will experience the exhibition more sensorially through works that capture the colors of nature—which align with the early summer season—and the emotion of love."
Oh Ji-yoon's solo exhibition, <Dignity: Accumulated Time>, is also being held on the 1st floor and B1 of Art Cube 2R2. Both exhibitions are open to the public until June 24.
