"Invited to Venice Biennale for the Second Consecutive Time"... Oh Ji-yoon Solo Exhibition Held at Art Cube 2R2

The Korea Economic Daily

Seoul Art Cube 2R2 Gallery announced on the 20th that it will host the solo exhibition 'Dignity: Accumulated Time' by artist Oh Ji-yoon for approximately two months starting on the 24th.

The core of this exhibition is Oh's 'Dignity' series, which he has consistently presented. An official from Art Cube 2R2 stated, "Artist Oh has continued his work by layering materials of different physical properties, such as charcoal, gold, hanji, and pearls, onto the canvas." He added, "The tens of thousands of brushstrokes and long production process leave diverse material states within a single screen, ultimately forming a high-density surface."

The focus of Artist Oh's work is the question of human existence. According to the gallery, his works specifically accumulate life's anxieties, pain, compassion, and introspection on the canvas, providing viewers with opportunities for empathy and contemplation. In particular, the Dignity series is evaluated as intensively showcasing the core theme of Artist Oh's work.

Artist Oh is an artist who has received attention from the international art world, having been invited to the Venice Biennale, the oldest contemporary art festival in the world, for the second consecutive time in 2024 and this year. This context is also the reason why Art Cube 2R2 hosted the exhibition coinciding with the opening of the Venice Biennale. An official from Art Cube 2R2 stated, "The exhibition holds great significance because it directly presents the same series in Korea as was exhibited at the Biennale," adding, "It is a rare opportunity to experience contemporary discourse forming in the global art world in real-time in Korea."

The exhibition will run simultaneously in the first floor and basement spaces of Art Cube 2R2 Main Exhibition Hall. The gallery stated that the exhibition was planned to allow visitors to experience the materiality and structure of the works in a multi-layered way within different spatial configurations.

Hong Ji-sook, CEO of Art Cube 2R2, said, "This exhibition intensively illuminates the theme of dignity, which Artist Oh has continuously explored." She added, "It is an opportunity to see the same series exhibited at the Venice Biennale in Seoul." CEO Hong said, "I hope visitors will directly encounter the material texture and depth of the canvas before the work, experiencing the difference in sensation, which is difficult to convey through images."
