Art Cube 2R2 Hosts Special Exhibition: 'Five Shining Female Artists of Korea'

The Korea Economic Daily

25/08/11 보도 – 아트큐브 2R2, 특별기획전 ‘한국의 빛나는 여성작가 5인전’ 개최

Art Cube 2R2, located in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, announced on the 11th that it will host a special exhibition showcasing five female artists who have established unique artistic worlds within the flow of modern Korean art, starting on the 22nd.

This exhibition was prepared to commemorate the gallery's first anniversary since moving. It underwent long and in-depth preparation, from theme selection and artwork curation to spatial arrangement. Notably, it features both representative and rare works by each artist, and various media—including painting, drawing, sculpture, and media art—are organically arranged across all floors, allowing visitors to experience the pieces in a three-dimensional manner.

The exhibition features masters of Korean female art history, including Cheon Kyung-ja, Park Rae-hyeon, Yoon Seok-nam, Bang Hye-ja, and Ryu Min-ja. Their works transcend the mere category of 'female,' demonstrating unique aesthetic achievements that they completed despite the constraints of their era. This exhibition, which encompasses diverse genres, is expected to offer visitors deep resonance and personal connection by reinterpreting, through today's perspective, the weight of life and the struggles of creation that they endured, and through the fierce contemplation and experimental spirit embedded throughout the exhibition space.

Hong Ji-sook, CEO of Art Cube 2R2, stated, 'This exhibition is a very special occasion to celebrate the gallery's one-year anniversary. In the spirit of summarizing the past year's journey and exploring future directions, we prepared every detail, from the planning stage to the exhibition design, more carefully than ever.' She added, 'This exhibition does not merely recall the achievements of female artists. We hope it becomes a forum to contemplate how the artistic legacy they left behind can be inherited and expanded by the next generation.'

The exhibition takes place across all floors, including the 1st floor of Art Cube 2R2, the underground Media Cube, and the 6th floor Lounge Fluxus. Each section features representative works, media pieces, and related publications by individual artists, allowing for a multifaceted viewing experience.

Furthermore, the exhibition is timed to coincide with Frieze Seoul and KIAF. Art Cube 2R2 will also participate in the 'Cheongdam Night' program running during Frieze Week. By introducing the history and contemporary relevance of Korean female art at a time when global art figures and collectors are visiting Seoul, it is expected to provide an opportunity to further expand international interest in Korean female artists.
